Gozo is a smaller sister island of Malta, lying north of Malta. Most tourists visit Gozo for day trips - somewhere else to explore, another beach for a change. There are some excellent beaches on Gozo, incuding one with red coloured sand.
Gozo is more peaceful than mainland Malta, with a slower pace of life - an ideal location if you would like a relaxing holiday and stay longer.
The local feast days can liven up the atmosphere and create a fair bit of noise with marching bands and fireworks, so do check dates if you want tranquillity.
To get there by bus from Valletta, take the number 45 bus to Cirkewwa and catch the small ferry to Mgarr Harbour on Gozo.
Alternatively, consider oneof the boat trips that sail to Gozo and Comino. Some of these allow you to swim from the boat.
Places to visit in Gozo:
-
Calypso Cave - legendary landing place of Ulysses from Greek mythology
-
Ggantija Temples
-
Ta' Cenc Cliffs
-
Azure Window
-
The Cittadella - a walled ancient town in the capital Victoria where there is a 17th century Baroque cathedral
There are jeep safari tours and bus tours around Gozo that allow you to explore sitting down with no effort at all.
